About Us
Hackathon Malaysia is an off shoot of Knowledge Group of Companies (KCG) which is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We have evolved into one of the strongest and successful event and conference organisers over the last 23 years. In addition to training and coaching, our principal, Knowledge Group of Companies is known in the country as an ecosystem builder as we collaborate with Regulators, Investors, Corporates, Enablers, and Start-Ups to create a sustainable growth journey in major technology verticals such as Fintech, Smart Cities, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, InsurTech, Smart Manufacturing, E&E Manufacturing Technologies, Digital Procurement, and HR Technologies.
A hackathon is a sprint-like design event wherein computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, product managers, project managers, domain experts, and others collaborate intensively on tech creative projects to create functioning software or hardware by the end of the event.We organize several hackathons as an initiative to boost innovation, technology adaptation, creative thinking, competitiveness, commercialization and more.Our team is experienced in organising specialised hackathons for government agencies, corporate partners and communities.
Past Events
DIGITAL AGTECH
Digital Agtech was Malaysia’s first AI themed hackathon in the agriculture industry. It was carried out in collaboration with MDEC. There were over 170 participants, and they came up with 30 different solutions.
OPENLAB
HSBC Openlab, a Fintech hackathon which boasts about 290 ( Two Hundred and Ninety ) participants from around the globe. Through this hackathon, HSBC launched their Openlab Sandbox platform in Malaysia.
GRAND CHALLENGE
There were four hackathons held across the nation in 3 - month period for more than 500 participants as part of Big Data Week 2018. At the 2018 NBTA Conference, the winning teams from the regional hackathons made a pitch for commercialisation.
HACKFEST.MY
Hackfest.my, an IoT-themed hackathon for KDU Penang University College, was the most recent hackathon. There were over 110 participants who worked on different IoT technologies for the Smart Cities initiative
IDE Hackathon 2022
This year, Malaysia has maintained its position as the world's top halal travel destination again. According to the MasterCard-Crescent Rating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2022, the country was named the top 'Muslim-Friendly Destination of the Year (OIC)'. Malaysia has held the top position since the index's inception in 2015.
The Global Muslim Travel Index predicts that by 2028, Muslim tourists will spend $225 billion. Additionally, its noted that there are 450 million Muslims who are digital natives travel and use technology (Global Muslim Travel Index). The top five countries for halal tourism spending are Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait.
The proposed hackathon will focus on the space of Halal travel, which includes family friendly travel, halal food, modest fashion, Islamic tourism activities, shopping, Islamic payments, and Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Government (B2G) tourism engagements.
This Halal Travel Hackathon 2022 is a 3-day event at Kuala Lumpur and with a target of 30 teams participating, which includes coders, engineers, students, and technology enthusiasts from Malaysia that will turn ideas into reality during the competition. Participants will explore and use cloud-based software during the hackathon to build and ideate Islamic Tourism solutions.
Solutions from the hackathon has potential to commercialised by the partners and program sponsors to value add to the Malaysian Islamic travel ecosystems.

OBJECTIVES OF HACKATHON
- To deploy new and attractive applications or solutions that focus on Muslim travellers.
- To give opportunity to young talents to create Islamic Digital Travel Platforms.
- To support and develop Islamic Travel Tech companies in Malaysia.
- To promote Malaysia as the best halal tourism destination, tech start-up and manufacturing hub to GCC members, mainly United Arab Emirates, Iran, Kuwait, Qatar and Dubai.
- To promote Muslim owned businesses and attractions to Muslim travellers via unique digital platforms.
